In the meantime, the Vikings brought in veteran wide receivers Brandon Jones(notes), released earlier this week by San Francisco, and Javon Walker(notes) for a tryout. Both players were given physicals. It’s uncertain whether the club plans to sign one or both. Obviously, the Vikings need to proceed like they are not going to have Harvin around for some time.

I think the Vikings are getting nervous about Percy’s headaches and Sidney’s hip.
I can’t say that I blame them.

Branden Lemke at Lemke’s Lott had a chance to interview Bryant McKinnie over the summer, and he posted the transcript of that interview on the site.
Lemke: So Bryant, how have you been spending the offseason so far?
McKinnie: Well after finishing up mini camp, we’re looking to get into some intense training camp. The offseason’s been pretty good for me so far, I’ve been in Florida a lot this offseason, been picking up the tennis game a little bit. Other than that, i’ve just been working on my record label.
Lemke: I hear you’re a man that enjoys playing tennis. Do you often play when you’re not on the football field?
McKinnie: I try to play tennis now to keep my good footwork going and get a good sweat in. It’s something that has become fun to me, where it doesn’t really feel like you’re getting a workout, but you actually are. Just something different I wanted to learn.

For being one of us run-of-the-mill bloggers, Lemke sure does a great job at locking up player interviews. Check out this one, then tell him that The Jazzy One says hi.

MANKATO — The Vikings agreed to terms with running back Toby Gerhart on a four-year, $3.767 million deal on Friday afternoon, according to NFL sources. Gerhart’s deal is worth $1.939 guaranteed.
Gerhart is the final of the VIkings’ eight draft picks to come to terms on an agreement. The deal got done about three hours before the Vikings first practice of training camp and Gerhart is expected to be on the field.

Good news for the Vikings as they signed their 3rd round draft pick Running Back Toby Gerhart. That means that all of the Vikings rookies will be in training camp, which is great for a team that is looking to improve an already stellar lineup.

The Viking Nation put up a great article this morning dissecting the Vikings Wide Receivers and Tight Ends.
Coming into last season it was obvious that they had a good group the start of last year. With the coming of Favre made this group even better. Face it this group would not have been as productive if T-Jack would have been the signal caller last season.
It will be interesting to see which receiver in this deep corps will step up this season. The Big 3 in Harvin, Rice and Berrian can strike at any time. It is hard for defenses to prepare the stop the entire group this is something that defenses did not have to worry about a couple of season back.
The Vikes receivers have improved under the Chilly “regime”.He had a bunch of player that could run, but could not play the receiver at the NFL level. Look at the corps that Chilly’s top 3 receivers in 2006: Troy Williamson, Travis Taylor, and Marcus Robinson. I sure do not miss the days to Williamson, now talk about a nightmare.

Adam from Vikings Gab brought up an interesting topic: Is Sidney Rice great only because of Favre?
I recently got into a somewhat heated (scotch was involved) discussion as to whether or not Sidney Rice’s success last year directly correlates with the presence of Brett Favre.
Me, being the self-proclaimed “Favre Basher” that I am, argued that Rice is a very talented and productive receiver regardless of who is chucking him the rock (or is it skipping the rock?). I, of course, brought out the cliché argument that it was injuries that held Rice back in his first two years, not quarterback play. When he was healthy, however, I saw enough flashes to suggest that we had something special in the young receiver. After all, not many wide outs (besides Moss) really “break out” before year three anyways.

I for one think its a little of both. I think Sidney Rice is a talented reciever, and I agree with Adam… I saw enough in his his play during his first two years to know he was going to be good. At the same time, I think a great player brings out greatness in the people around him.
I was a Chicago Bulls fan growing up in the 90s.
Scottie Pippen was a great player for the Bulls. Was he great because of his own talent, or great because Michael Jordan made him great.
Again, in the end, I think it was a little of both.
But also in the end… great is great… no matter how you get there.

Just a quick little note: You guys should head over to Lemke’s Lot to check out his interview with Vikings safety Eric Frampton. Frampton seems like a cool guy, and he took the time to sit down with one of my fellow Vikings bloggers to have a 10 minute chat, which definitely earns him some points in my book.
Here’s the link: Interview with Eric Frampton

Mr. Lemke has had the opportunity to interview several players, which I think is great.

For those of you who are friends with the Viking Ship on Facebook, you probably saw a link I posted last week to an article on the Vikings UK Blog called “From The Beard of Chilly”. If you didn’t see it, it was a humorous article written diary-style from the point of view of Brad Childress’ beard.

Well, the beard is back this week for more!
Here’s a little taste:
3.30am – Brad can’t sleep, so I can’t sleep. Every time I drop off the bugger grunts something about a “good football team” or “how do you like these Wranglers?”
I highly recommend checking it out to escape from the drama of Brett Favre’s surgery and the Williams Wall trial. It’s a quick read, but it’s a fun one.

So, the Draft starts Thursday, eh?
I love the draft. Absolutely love it. I’ll admit that I miss it starting on Saturday mornings and going throughout the day, because I typically centered my entire day around planting myself in front of the TV and watching it. I’m not sure how I’m going to feel about it starting on Thursday night now, but I’ll give it a fair chance before I complain. (or at least before I complain too much more!)
Of course the big thing around the internet this time of year with football blogs is mock drafts.
So, where is The Viking Ship’s mock draft?
Well, to be honest, I’ve never really been good with things like that. I love the NFL, and I follow it pretty closely, but as far as team needs and weaknesses and stuff, I feel like I don’t have a great concept of anyone outside of the NFC North and possibly the AFC West (one of my good friends is a diehard Broncos fan, and we spend many days dissecting our favorite divisions). For the other 6 divisions in the NFL, I really only follow them in the off-season when it comes to bigger names, so I miss out on a lot of the smaller trades and free agent signings. That makes it hard for me to really know what a team like the Houston Texans really needs.
I’m also a big college football fan, but I’m pretty much the kind of fan that watches my team (the Iowa Hawkeyes), their conference, and maybe the big game of the week. Of course I know plenty about the big names that are coming out, like Bradford or Claussen, and living literally less than 5 miles away from the Nebraska border I can also tell you plenty about Big Suh, but other than that I really don’t have a great grasp on who the best center in the nation is, or who would be a solid outside linebacker for a team to pick up.
Because of that, I freely admit that a mock draft done by me would be a collection of bits and pieces from the other mock drafts around the web, and it would be a somewhat uneducated guess. So, I’m going to leave the mock drafting up to the people that are much better than me at it.
Don’t worry, though. I have some things up my sleeve for this week that will get you all ready for Thursday night, so be sure you’re watching The Viking Ship throughout the week.
But since we’re talking about Mock Drafts, I might as well suggest my favorite place to go to read one.
If you want information leading up to this Thursday’s draft, and how it directly and indirectly impacts the Vikings, you need to be visiting Vikings Gab. Adam pretty much lives for this time of year, and his coverage of it is great. Here is a link to his Mock Draft page, which he updates frequently, but be sure to read his other recent posts as well, because like I said, he pretty much lives for this time of the year.
Then leave him a comment and tell him I said hi.
