Open QB Competition?

I am seeing that it is an open QB competition as long as you do not have the name Ponder on the back of the jersey. I am not upset with Ponders lack of 1st teams reps. According to Vikings coach Mike Zimmer insisted Tuesday that the competition to be his starting quarterback remains a three-player position battle without a clear favorite as those steamy summer days in Mankato loom. I do not believe it by any means. It is Cassel vs Bridgewater.

Zimmer feels no urgency to choose a quarterback among veterans Matt Cassel and Christian Ponder and rookie Teddy Bridgewater, even with his first offseason program as head coach coming to a close with this week’s three-day minicamp. Sure, it would be beneficial for one quarterback to settle in with the starting offense sooner than later. But Zimmer says picking the right man for the job is paramount, and his mind isn’t close to being made up here in June, three months before the regular season starts.

So by my early assumption that Cassel is the clear favorite to start the season as the Vikings starting QB. Remember you heard it here first.Smile

I feel that the Vikings want to have Bridgewater learn from the bench at least 1 season maybe 2, but to is yet to be seen.

Cassel completed every pass during team drills. Bridgewater, meanwhile, made a couple of strong throws downfield, and the first-round pick already has been given some leeway to change or flip plays at the line of scrimmage.

What are your thoughts of Zimmer denying from having a clear favorite at QB so far?

The Vikings Can’t Even Catch A Break At Home

This season has NOT went the way that we had all hoped it would.

Let me just say this… if you are someone who enjoys betting on the Vikings, perhaps you should just keep picking them to lose.

Our beloved Minnesota Vikings host the Chicago Bears this Sunday afternoon.  That’s right… they HOST the Bears, as in, the game is being played at Mall of America Field in the Hubert H Humphrey Metrodome.  The place that the Minnesota Vikings call home.  And they are hosting the Chicago Bears, a team that has been far from dominant this season, and who may even be without quarterback Jay Cutler for this game…

… and the Vikings are the underdog.

I have looked at several lines today, and it looks like the Bears are somewhere around a 4 point favorite.  Usually odds makers give the home team around a 3 point cushion, which makes things look even worse.

To be fair, I’m not sure if these odds were published before or after the news that Cutler would miss the game.  There were a lot of Bears fans who were hoping that their quarterback would be able to take the field again this Sunday, but I heard the “official” announcement today that he is indeed out for the game.

But really, does it matter?  The Vikings just managed to play to a TIE GAME with a team that had lost 3 straight games without their starting quarterback… and they blew a 23-7 lead in the second half to get to that point.

Unfortunately, the Vikings have managed to bring out the skeptic in me, and I’m usually a pretty optimistic person.  At this point, I’m really just looking forward to this season being over so we can start looking toward next year.

Someone should put us fans out of our misery!

… but until that happens, my blood is still purple, so SKOL!

According to NFL Odds, The Vikings Are Actually Favored Sunday!

Last Sunday, the 0-3 Minnesota Vikings “hosted” (if you can call being called the “home” team when you’re playing in a different country “hosting”) the 0-3 Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Vikings came out on top.

This Sunday, the 1-3 Minnesota Vikings are hosting (for real, this time) the 1-3 Carolina Panthers, and some of the experts think that the Vikings will once again come out on top!

According to the most recent NFL odds I’ve looked at, the Vikings are a 2.5 point favorite over the Panthers this weekend.  Of course, they say that the home team typically gets 3 points for being at home.  That would mean that at a neutral site, the Panthers would be favored by .5.

But… fortunately for us, we’re not playing at a neutral site!

It’s actually pretty similar when you compare the offensive stats of the two teams, with a slight edge going to the Vikings.

  • The Vikings average 350.5 total yards per game
  • The Panthers average 329 total yards per game
  • The Vikings are averaging 28.8 points per game
  • The Panthers are averaging 18.8 points per game
  • The Vikings are +2 in turnovers
  • The Panthers are even in turnovers
  • The Vikings have thrown 5 interceptions
  • The Panthers have thrown 5 interceptions
  • The Vikings have a team passer rating of 77.4
  • The Panthers have just a slightly better rating of 78.4

The defensive stats are a little more lopsided, in favor of the Panthers

  • The Vikings are giving up 30.8 points per game
  • The Panthers are giving up 18.8 points per game
  • The Vikings are giving up 430.8 yards per game
  • The Panthers are giving up 301.5 yards per game
  • The Vikings are giving up 47% of third downs
  • The Panthers are giving up 37% of third downs
  • The Vikings defense is a little better with 7 interceptions
  • The Panthers defense has 6 interceptions.

Before you look at those stats as being too depressing, though, keep in mind that the Panthers stats on BOTH sides of the ball were inflated when they played a terrible New York Giants team a couple weeks ago.  The Panthers won 38-0 in that game, which boosted their Points-Per-Game average on offense and brought it way down on defense.  They also held the Giants to only 150 net yards, which makes them look a lot better in the defensive column.

The biggest question for the Vikings, obviously, will be who starts at quarterback.  Right now, my guess would be Matt Cassel.  Coach Leslie Frazier says that Christian Ponder will start if he is healthy, but I would think that with Matt Cassel coming off of a win last week against the Steelers, and with new Vikings QB Josh Freeman waiting finish learning the offense so he can get out onto the field, the Vikings won’t be in much of a rush to get Ponder out there.

I think the Vikings can get this done!

Taking A Step Back

Going into the season, I thought that the Vikes would have a little better year passing the ball with the increased talent at the WR position. As it stands right now it is not the case at all. I do not know it the playcalling(I think is some of the problem) or the offense as an unit unable to execute plays. After the Vikes lost to the Browns on Sunday, I had to take a step back and take a good look at the schedule. I compared it to the “product” that the Vikings have displayed in the first 3 games.

After crunching the numbers and taking a indepth look at the Vikings opponents and it does not look pretty at all. I am figuring that the Vikings are going to win 2-3 games this season at best. It is sad to see this could be the possible outcome from the season in Thunderdome. I hope that I am wrong.

I was hoping for a progression on Christian Ponder, but he not shown me that he can CONSISTENTLY be the leader for the Vikings in the year to come. They game T-Jack less of a shot that Ponder.

We fans will see if it Cassell is London due to a rib injury that Ponder has been dealing with. I would be shocked to see anybody behind center besides Ponder. If Cassell tears it up on Sunday. Ponder guess where he will end up.

The defense has not been helpful this season either they can not stop anything this season. Two consecutive games the Vikes D has given up the losing TD pass in the closing minutes.

What are your thoughts of the Vikes as a unit?
